In 2002, I spent six weeks with the late, great American musician Elliott Smith at his recording studio, home, and longtime LA haunts. We talked. We played music. He told me about his childhood and about his dreams for the future. I saw him suffer and I saw him begin to heal. I thought it was the beginning of a long friendship. I was only 24 and he was only 33. I never saw him again.

This is the story of that time and of its impact on my own life through the years. I’m telling it for a reason: Elliott told me about his Foundation for Abused Children, and his determination to fund it with revenue from his tour dates and album sales. To honor Elliott’s charitable intent, I’ve set up a place where listeners can contribute. 100% of donations will be given directly to non-profits benefitting victims of child abuse. The first organization is Childhelp. I hope you’ll join me in contributing. If you’d like to, please go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/storytelling-for-childhelp

Thanks for listening.
